The State of Rhode Island Department of Health has a Health Professional Loan Repayment Program

    It's Mission

To improve access to care and retain providers who provide healthcare services in underserved communities and to address health professional shortages that cause disparities in health.

    What The DOH Will Do

The DOH works with the Health Professional Loan Repayment Board to offer health education loan repayments to eligible health professionals. These individuals serve in a variety of disciplines including primary care, dentistry, and mental health and have made a two-year commitment to practice in medically underserved communities as identified through the Health Professional Shortage Area process.

The Board receives, reviews, and evaluates all applications from healthcare professionals and sites to determine program eligibility based on regulations and the availability of funding

    What You Should Do

    Health Professionals with Student Loans

Apply for loan repayment assistance if you work in and underserved area and meet eligibility requirements. MORE

Health Facilities in Medically Underserved Areas

If you are designated as a federally approved site, encourage professionals with outstanding student loans in your employ to check application eligibility criteria. MORE

If you are not designated as an approved site but would like to be, check to see if your site meets national Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) site eligibility criteria. Refer to Rhode Island HPSA mapping for more information.
